I live in Boise and didn't hear about this show until my brother, who lives in a non-contiguous state, told me about it a month ago. The show is in year three of production. How did it go unnoticed in the town with the always "in the top 10" ranked football team that the show was modeled after (at least in show name and uniform colors)? Check out comparative slide show (above)...I think the only thing not used in the show is BSU's football "tradition bucking" blue artificial turf (more fondly referred to by us locals as the Smurf Turf)....maybe the show should have at least countered with an orange field (how about for use in a revived Sunkist Bowl?).
Spike TV has pretty much given free reigns to the show's creators, Chris Romano (Sammy Cacciatore on the show) and Eric Falconer, to explore almost every college subject not yet already explored in Farrelly brothers movies (sexting, Vajazzling, and all-night co-ed raves hosted at sorority houses).
Alex Moran (played by Darin Brooks) plays a laid back, no ambition type quarterback (more Ryan Dinwiddie and a lot less Kellen Moore) both on and off the field. Alan Ritchson plays the overbullying Thad Castle, the Goats' persuasively whiny, bleached-white toothed Senior linebacker and always wanna be team captain.
Ed Marinaro, very former Minnesota Vikings running back, plays a convincingly good "mountain west" type college head coach as Marty Daniels. He needs Vajazzling shined in front of him in order to take his mind off the team's play book. Denise Richards plays his sexy and still accommodating ex-wife.
The folks at Spike TV did an excellent job with professional style branding of Blue Mountain State's fictional team, albeit obviously borrowing heavily from that of Boise State University...Maybe Spike TV's design staff could help out some real collegiate football teams that need help in the branding department...one's whose uniforms and team logos still look more high school than college (any Oregon team comes to mind).
