Schticky or Sticky Situation?

1/31/2012

Infomercial King Telebrands, under A.J. Khubhani, has a new product filling cable 2-minute spots called the Sticky Buddy.  With the help of surviving Pitchmen Anthony Sullivan, the ad trudges through all the uses for a sticky but cleanable lint type roller/retriever.  Like most Sullivan pitches, he keeps the ghost of Billy Mays alive with the "As Seen On TV" unique pitch-rhyming intact, with feature packed phrases like "...the super sticky lint roller that has the power of glue without the goo!"

And with almost all Telebrands products, this is a low manufacture cost item.  They deliver products to the masses that are the least expensive to produce, made from various plastics, rubber and other inexpensive to produce synthetic materials, helping keep their advertised sale price down (usually in the $10.00 range for tv, not including the $6.99 S & H add-on).  The online upsell offers a jumbo Sticky Buddy (can't tell how big or small it is by the picture) for an additional $6.99 and begs the viewer to ask about free shipping...I didn't have the time to listen to a robo-rep take me through a convoluted robo-upsell to squeeze all they can out of my credit card....but maybe someone can find out how one gets that.

Now, I'm doing a little research for this current blog write-up and I find that an almost exact competing product, Schticky, with Vince " Florida John" Offer, is also just being introduced...This is what can happen when ideas are submitted simultaneously to separate companies by an inventor or small company, and both infomercial companies review the idea and conclude they can proceed on marketing the product themselves (I'm not saying this is what happened here).  If one company can't shut down the other with cease and desist letters, it ends up coming down to the ad and name of the product that resonates the best with consumers (i.e., Zorbees loss to ShamWow!, or lesser known finger clipper battle with Clip it Clean loss to Sure Clip).

The Offer offer is more than just schticky, it relies on porn-style ad copy.  I hate even repeating it to give it any creedence, but it asks a lady sitting down, with legs and torso only in view "Do you have a problem with that shedding 'cat' (slang for female genitalia)?"..and the neighbor who walks in on Offer and says "Hey Vince, oh, you're playing with your schticky"...Imagine the yuk yuks at the office as they came up with these lines for the ad. Seeing Offer poke fun at himself with a mock arrest mug photo leaves us with the same bad taste in our mouth that we all got when O.J. Simpson tried to hawk his "If I Did It" book...

It looks like silicon feature of the roller is the main innovation that these two products share, except the roller surface is molded flat for Schticky and molded with grippy rubber fingers for Sticky Buddy.  You can get these nearly identical product offerings by companies, sometimes if they don't own any real intellectual property (utility patents) around their products, so neither company can stop the other from going to market with the knock-off.

As consumers, we just have to be subjected to the marketing ploys of the two companies trying to get you to buy their product. ...You have to give Khubani credit for not having to resort to crass and "knock you over the head" sexually suggestive innuendos to peddle his wares like it is being done Schticky style.

Nope, I give khubani no credit. His commercial was plain boring and didn't make me want that product. I feel Vince always makes his pitch entertaining and funny. Like the slapchop and it's remix. I'm always tempted to buy his stuff. I love the schticky ad and all it's crude humor.

thanks for your reply. everyone has a right to their own opinions...If you like lewd and crude though, Vince is your man!

As the inventor of this product I can assure you that I never gave Vince approval to go on air and sell my 1st version of the StickyBrush.

Yes there is IP protection as you will see soon.

And I wrote the script for Billy, that's how long I have been working on the product.

We are in the process of perfecting the commercial as we had to cut it together to beat the knock off.

And we did!

Hi Tylor, nice to hear from you regarding your new Sticky Buddy...

It's just curious how they came out with an almost exact product around the same time you and Telebrands were to hit the cable waves. I've just seen companies go to market without obtaining rights from a submitting inventor, not sure if this is what happened to you on the "Schticky" side..

I'm glad to hear that you do have ip protection in place, with the muscle of Telebrands to defend and conquer (by hopefully using cease and desist to any offending company)...

Regardless, it's an exciting time for you...Congrats on the new product release!! I hope your new product continues to stay on top of the charts on both tv and at retail and the "Vince" offer retreats into oblivion!

Best,

Doug

tylor, maybe you know what's going on from the outside...is this self serving and another outlet to try to peddle the Schticky product?
check out the 3 posts from Dan@SHove It, at the end of the comments sections of this blog writing.

made any progress on your efforts that you alluded to? seems like a lot of controversy around the aforementioned products..

I just ordered the Sticky Buddy from Telebrands and got suckered into buying two rollers. That $10 each plus $13.98 for a total of $33.98. Although I did click NO on their website for the 2nd one, it still added it to my cart together with the additional S & H.
I tried calling the telephone number listed but got a recording to call Customer Service at a difference number. When I called that number all I got was another recording.
Now I'm stuck with a $33.98 bill. I'm tempted to just refuse the package altogether but they will not refund the Shipping & Handling charge. Either way they win. PRETTY DECEPTIVE. I'll never order from Telebrands again..

Hi Bob...Not to defend your bad experience with Telebrands, but a lot of infomercial companies seem to have problems with their ordering systems in place...resulting in unhappy ordering experiences for consumers (wrong order, overcharged, no ability to contact live representative). I hope you get yours resolved to your satisfaction...If not, contact the Better Business Bureau to help you resolve it...Good Luck!!

I will NEVER order from Telebrands again. I got a Pasta Boat from a local "As Seen On TV" store and found an offer for an accessory steamer rack. The rack is supposed to have an instruction book and recipe list for the accessory. Instead I got another copy of the Pasta Boat instructions. What is worse, the Pasta Boat itself came with a little steamer rack that sits on the bottom - not on top like the accessory - but otherwise does the same thing. I called them several times and was always promised the instructions were on their way. After enough time they said it had been too long to get a credit or return the accessory. They do not allow their customer service reps to transfer me to a supervisor. I definitely am taking it to the BBB and I suggest all of you avoid Telebrands like the Plague.

TV pitchwoman Lindsey Brooks has decided to take on Vince Offer the formerly the Shamwow guy, the old fashioned way, head to head, the commercial's the Schticky vs The Shove it, Vince stole the product from her and didn't pay her the royalties he owed toward the millions he has made on the product, so she appears to be back to pitching the product on tv. Very funny lines... annoying x rag salesman... do you know someone who needs to shove it.

I don't get this. Is the Lindsey Brooks ShoveIt ad spoofing people who wrote stuff about her on the internet purporting that she stole the product idea from someone else? Fill me in! It's no joke, if its only an inside joke! Either that or self serving marketing, trying to further the Schticky cause with more controversy! I want to know, there seems to be a lot to be said about the Schticky situation! Someone shed some light on this!!

Since I purchased the Schticky a few weeks ago, many people have been asking me how useful this gadget is in the kitchen. They've also been asking me to put.

Ok, first rule when ordering off infomercials is: Don't!! The products they sell are in no way different from any other product found at most department stores all over the country. What's worse is that the products you do order from a television advertisement never works as they show it and it ushalky is cheaply made and falls apart. They try to get you to buy their item by showing you the extras, ring all the bells and blow all the whistles and most consumers are caught, hook, liine and sinker with the cheap s&h as well...yes, key word being "most" people, but not me. Afterall, it was P.T. Barnum who said, "A sucjer is born every day" & I couldn't agree more when it comes to people giing their hard-earned money over to these crooks selking infomercial products. I have ordered numerous stuff off t.v. and hve yet to get it home, try it out, and see it work and function oriperly, as it did on the commercial. I bought the chopper thing and it broke slicing boiled eggs the first time I used it, bought an e-cig for "only $4.95 in shipping and hendling" but found out from a teller at my bank these people had charged me a $99.00 membership fee and were going to conti ue to biol me monthly, before I csncelled the order, caled their customer "care line" (yeah right!) & complained and threatened a small clsim's court lawsuit. I reported them to the BBB as well. I just don't see how these as seen on t.v. products are being sold to us when they never work right or break and are cheaply made, that is breakibg the law and called false advertising. I'm telling you, if you want quality, do not by anything off the t.v. It is all a bunch of cheap crap, shabbily made junk, that gives you instant buyer's remorse and a foolish feeling once you realize you've been had. Forget the fast talking salesman on the commercial, he is in sales for a reason & it's to get your money, don't be fooled by all their marketing ploys and gimmicks because more often than not, the product you buy is not what they are advertising and it will be a piece of junk. Why not go to the mall or specialty stores, or support ocal businesses or mom and pop's stores and get quality items instead? Oh and the guy talking/selling the Schticky (was that why the comedy and was so lame?? Schtick -get it) looks so beat up and deceptive, I wouldn't trust him to hold my door open for me. He is in your face, loud, obnoxious, has a junky-like demeanor and the material used to sell the sticky roller on the infomercial is plain trashy, crude and raunchy! I looked up when they said, "Is that pu**y shedding" & one man walks in and eludes to the spokesman playing with his penis by using a sexual inuendo...come on! Is business so bad that you have to resort to that kind of filth to push your product? I got an invention idea that'll sell and it is something everyone who buys is can rely on: TAPE! It works just as well as yours for getting lint, hair, pennies, etc off objects and doesn't cost us our peace of mind when we purchase it because it's gimmick free and has no sleazy salesman endorsing it. Shame on you, Schticky businesspeople, for allowing your commercial to be so debasing and rude and for thinking that is how most Amrricans want to be talked to. You know who your biggest buyers are? Housewives, at home all day, raising children and in between their multiple taks throughout the day, channel surfing....if you think us women enjoy being verbally smacked with nasty language with our kids in the room listening too, you are dead wrong and you need to fire your marketing department and hirr some more mature, intelligent peopke. Where's the innovation? Wy should we buy your product when we can get sothe same thing at Walmart -that actually works! And if we want tonreturn it, we get a FULL refund, store credit, or another one that works properly...not some recording tellingnus we won't be receiving our shipping & handling money back that we paid and certainly not ripped off. I am disgusted at the state of items being sold on t.v. today, they are all crappy, junk, made for a few bucks overseas, and mass produced to the unsuspecting consumer here in the USA, under the deceptive guise of "satisfaction guaranteed" when 9 times out of te10, with as seen on tv products, it is never what you expect and satisfaction is not guaranteed.....quute the contrairy, satisfaction is nonexistent guaranteed.

Meg, thanks for viewing and then venting!! That's a good thing!! Many consumers share your same frustrations with the ad content and product quality. If enough people vent and refuse to order products based on R- rated commercials or products that don't do what the ads say they can do, infomercial companies will be forced to start using better ads and by selling more quality items in the stores...It may not happen in our lifetime, but it doesn't hurt to ask!

Stop by again!!
